As a Girl Scout I chose to tie my Silver Award in with my non-profit. I want to help by touching the lives of those newly diagnosed as well and wanted to take the "sting" out of the diagnosis for kids ages 3-12yr olds. To do this, I decided to put together "care bags" that have some diabetic essentials (alcohol swabs, band aids, small journal to keep track of blood glucose numbers, etc) as well as other non-diabetic related items (coloring books, toys, etc).
Over the course of my project, I also reached out to several different companies who generously donated items and coupons for different services. Those companies include:
-
7eleven (donated coupons for free sugar free slurpees)
-
Chick - fil - A (donated coupons for free kids meals)
-
MyID (donated medical ID bracelets and activated coupon code for additional purchases)
-
Myabetic (activated coupon code for purchases)
As cool as the bracelets that MyID sent me, I know they aren't everyone's favorite accessory but they are a necessary "evil" so in case of an emergency they get the correct treatment. To help with this, I also made 60 paracord bracelets in a variety of colors and shapes that will go into the bags and give them another option to attach a medical alert to.
Enjoy the pictures of the journey to get these bags together and delivered to the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes in Aurora CO.
